F.E. Warren AFB is located three miles west of Cheyenne, Wyoming. The base occupies around 6,000 acres here, and remote missile bases located in Nebraska and Colorado add another 12,000 acres to Warren’s territory. Its primary mission is to defend the safety of the United States as one of three bases tasked with the security and deployment of the only land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles in the country. The host unit based here is the 90th Missile Wing, which was activated on July 1st, 1963. The 90th Missile Wing is made up of over 3,300 military members and 960 civilians. The “Mighty Ninety” as they are called, are assigned to the 20th Air Force and are responsible for the monitoring, operation and deployment of the 150 ICBM’s housed here. The men and women that make up the 90th MW are active 24 hours a day 365 days a year constantly in a state of readiness. The launch crews consist of two officers, and specialized communication systems allow the President of the United States with highly reliable nearly immediate direct contact with each launch crew. The missiles themselves are installed in hardened silos to protect against outside attacks and are connected to underground missile alert facilities using a system of hardened cables.
