Fort McCoy Army Base
Fort McCoy is a full-service training base located between Sparta and Tomah Wisconsin. They aim to support the overall readiness of all branches of the United States Military by serving as a Total Force Training Center. More than 150,000 joint, interagency and multinational forces visit Fort McCoy to take part in live, constructive and integrated training operations each year. There are many units stationed here on a temporary basis, but a several are considered permanent such as the 86th Training Division, the 182nd Infantry Brigade and Criminal Investigation Division. Several large-scale training exercises are held here twice a year. WAREX (Warrior Exercise) focuses on platoon level training and CSTX (Combat Support Training Exercise) provides a Company level training experience. Global Medic is an annual joint-field exercise replicating all aspects of combat medical support. In addition, Operation Cold Steel is a major initiative geared toward improving the Army Reserves gunnery training. During the winter months, Fort McCoy runs it’s Cold Weather Operations Course allowing soldiers from various branches of the armed forces to operate different types of military equipment in harsh, cold weather conditions. In addition to being a major training facility, Fort McCoy was utilized as a mobilization station during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, deploying over 9,000 soldiers during the Persian Gulf War.
